The questions people always ask

How is my offer calculated?

The professional refurbishers on our marketplace have wishlists of devices and the prices they’ll pay for them. Using your assessment, we match you with the highest offer out of the more than 250 refurbishers we work with.

What devices are eligible for Trade-in?

​​Currently, you can trade in smartphones, tablets, MacBooks, headphones, earphones, speakers, and gaming consoles. This includes devices that have already been refurbished or repaired.

How do I prepare my device before sending it?

Delete your data and disconnect from all personal accounts (e.g. iCloud, Google), and take photos of your device from all angles before you pack it. Use a strong box that can comfortably fit your item and packing materials to wrap and position it securely so it can’t move inside the box. Tape up all seams and corners using strong tape. Take photos of your package from all angles. These come in handy if anything unexpected happens in transit or you receive a counteroffer from the refurbisher.

How do I ship my device?

Show your QR code at the drop-off point and the shipping provider will print your prepaid shipping label for you, or you can print it yourself. If you’re eligible for a free mailing kit, the label will come with it. Stick the prepaid shipping label to your package, and take it to the shipping provider (their locations will be linked in your confirmation email).

How long do I have to send my device?

Your price offer expires after 21 days. If you’ve missed the 21-day window, do another Trade-in assessment and accept the offer to get another prepaid shipping label. Note that since some time has passed, you may receive a different offer from a different seller.

What happens to the data on my device?

Data is automatically deleted from devices traded in once they’ve been received by the refurbisher. But, you can also delete the data yourself before sending it in, if you prefer.

How do I get paid?

Add your bank account number, routing number, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your SSN (or your full driver’s license number) to your Back Market account under “Trade-ins” > “Add payment details”. Once you’ve entered these details, you’ll receive payment for your trade-ins within 6 business days of the refurbisher sending the payment. 

What happens to my device after trade-in?

Data is automatically deleted from devices by the refurbisher. Your phone will then be refurbished. If it’s in poor condition, it will be stripped for parts and then properly recycled.

Can I recycle my device instead?

Recycling is the next best choice after Trade-in. We’re working hard to launch our recycling program in your area. In the meantime, we recommend searching online for a local recycler who operates in environmentally responsible ways.

How does Trade-in work?

In a nutshell: Trade in your old tech and get cash for it. Yep, unlike other trade-in programs out there, with Back Market Trade-in you get cold hard cash dropped straight into your bank account because, well, it's better than store credit (amiright?).

It's easy, too. Go through the assessment, get a price offer instantly from an expert refurbisher, and mail your device for free using our prepaid shipping label. Once the refurbisher receives the item, they'll check to see that it matches the assessment. If it's all good, they'll pay you by direct deposit. If things are a little off, all is not lost! The refurbisher will send you a counteroffer. But the power is always yours: you're free to accept or reject any offers.

Why's that? Reusing, repairing, and refurbishing our electronics is a simple way to reduce the environmental damage that comes from manufacturing brand-new tech and lower the amount of toxic e-waste that ends up in our landfills. Guess this makes you a do-gooder. We're okay with it if you are.
