Is the iPhone 13 still any good in 2024? Read our full review for all the features and specs you need to know before buying an iPhone 13.
Published May 12, 2023 - The iPhone 12 series brings many welcome updates that make it a very worthwhile upgrade from its predecessor. With a powerful processor, improved resolutions, and larger display, it’s a welcome addition to Apple’s iPhone lineup. Here’s what you need to know about the iPhone 12 specs to get you started.
The iPhone 12 display sizes vary depending on the model. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are identical in size, with both devices featuring a 6.1-inch display. However, the 12 Pro is considerably heavier than the standard model. The iPhone 12 mini is the smallest of the bunch, with the 5.4-inch display making it a pocket-friendly choice. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is by far the largest, weighing in at 228 grams and featuring a 6.7-inch display.

6.1-inch diagonal display | 5.4-inch diagonal display | 6.1-inch diagonal display | 6.7-inch diagonal display |
71.5 x 146.7 x 7.4mm | 64.2 x 131.5 x 7.4mm | 71.5 x 146.7 x 7.4mm | 78.1 x 160.8 x 7.4mm |
2.81 x 5.77 x .29 inches | 2.53 x 5.18 x .29 inches | 2.81 x 5.77 x .29 inches | 3.07 x 6.33 x .29 inches |
The standard iPhone 11 is a fair bit larger and 28 grams heavier than the iPhone 12, despite sharing an identical screen size. When you compare the Pro Max models from each series, the iPhone 12 is marginally larger and heavier, but the difference is negligible. However, the trade-off is that the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a noticeably smaller screen.
Comparing to the next model up, the dimensions of the standard iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 are almost the same, with the latter device being 0.3mm deeper. It’s also slightly heavier, weighing 10 grams more than the iPhone 12. When you compare the Pro Max models from each series, you’ll once again find near-identical dimensions. As with the standard models, the iPhone 12 and 13 Pro models are only different by .3mm of depth, which you likely won’t notice.
The design materials of the iPhone 12 takes its lead from the iPhone 11, with both boasting an aluminum frame and curved edges. However, Apple updated the design of the iPhone 12 making it a sleeker phone option compared to the iPhone 11. The rounded edges and clean lines make it one of the more ergonomic smartphones on the market. Even the largest model in the series, the iPhone Pro Max, is easy to handle and feels comfortable in hand.
Even though the iPhone 12 models have a slightly updated design, the layout of those all-important controls and buttons are largely identical. If you’re picking up an iPhone 12 facing the screen, you’ll find volume buttons on the left-hand side of the device. A little further down is the SIM tray. On the right, you’ll find the lock/wake screen button, while the lightning connector is located in the usual spot at the bottom where you’ll also find the microphone and stereo speaker.
In terms of layout, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 are almost the same. However, with the iPhone 11, the SIM tray is located on the right-hand side of the handset. Meanwhile, all models from the iPhone 13 series adopt the same button layout as the iPhone 12 lineup.
We’ll start with the all important question that most people ask about new phone models: Is the iPhone 12 waterproof? Yes, the iPhone 12 models all hold an IP68 rating and are water-resistant at depths of up to 1.5 meters. This also means those internal components are protected against dust. Ideal if you’re someone who doesn't like to add covers and cases to their device.
The iPhone 12 series outranks the iPhone 11 lineup on just about every count. In addition to being more lightweight and streamlined, the iPhone 12 delivers improved resolutions and pixel density. The battery life of the iPhone 12 is also slightly improved. However, you might struggle to see much of a difference if you’re using 5G.
Thinking about upgrading to the iPhone 13? You’ll have to look hard to find any discernible difference between the two. At a push, the iPhone 13 comes out on top thanks to its A15 Bionic chipset and slightly larger screen, but the price to upgrade doesn’t really seem justified.
If you’re looking to do away with Apple together, there’s always the Galaxy S21 series to consider. The Galaxy S21 has a slightly better display, while an improved battery life means you’ll have to spend less time charging than with an iPhone 12. However, the differences are marginal, so it’s really a case of which brand you feel most loyal to.
